Zero Waste Simcoe chair dismayed at eco-fees blunder
Comments in Toronto Star “the consumer is none the wiser” are a setback for all who rely upon public trust
Zero Waste Simcoe Chair Gord McKay has contacted Gemma Zecchini, CEO of Ontario’s Stewardship Ontario program regarding her comments in this news item Toronto Star Article – July 10, 2010 “Bury Eco Fees”
“I was dismayed to read the captioned article relating how Stewardship Ontario handled the release of the latest round of “eco-fees”. McKay said that …”the remark attributed to your organization “…the consumer is none the wiser” is a setback for our work and all groups who rely upon public trust.
“Zero Waste Simcoe, is a grass roots not-for-profit that encourages active public involvement in our waste practices, including recycling. We engage all people in a spirit of openness and candor about waste. In fact, we believe that it is only by properly informing the public about waste choices that we will be able to start reducing the amount of waste we all generate.” [McKay] “Our efforts will be negatively affected by this untimely reminder that some public systems cannot be trusted”.
