Whether it’s through the news, documentaries or personal observation, we can see that human actions are creating serious, long-term impacts on all life. Scientists are telling us that we face a biodiversity crisis, with one million species now at risk of extinction.

Canada hosted a nature summit (Nature COP 15) in Montreal in December 2022, where the Government of Canada — along with the international community — committed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

In December 2023 — on the one-year anniversary of that commitment — federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault stood with his ministerial counterparts from other countries and announced the Government of Canada’s commitment to introduce a federal nature accountability bill in 2024.

A nature accountability act will help keep Canada on track to meet the targets agreed to at COP 15 and will provide legislative backing for the biodiversity strategy the federal government is developing.

That’s why we are urging you to sign the parliamentary petition calling on the prime minister to introduce a bill to create a nature accountability act early this year. Sign the petition before the deadline on March 14.

This petition is easy and only takes a few minutes. You can do it online by following this link.

Wildlife and habitat loss also threaten our health, economy and wellbeing. It’s time to take action to halt and reverse the degradation of nature.

Please share this email with your friends, family and networks, and encourage them to sign as well. Together, we can make a difference!

Thank you for your support and attention,

Lisa Gue
Manager, National Policy
