AWARE Simcoe news release April 2 2015
AWARE Simcoe is calling on Natural Resources Minister David Orazietti to start immediate consultation with local First Nations on the closing of Springwater Park.
“Consultation is a must,” said AWARE Simcoe chair Don Morgan, expressing support for the actions of First Nations people in occupying the park.
“As they have many times before, our native brothers and sisters are stepping up to defend important values in our society’s relationship with the land.”
Morgan pointed out that the park is a much-loved destination for many Simcoe County residents.
“The Ministry of Natural Resources ignored overwhelming opposition from local people,” said Morgan, adding that no one believes the ministry’s assertion that the park cannot be run as a financially viable operation.
Morgan noted that Orazietti was not minister at the time the decision was made and called on him to reconsider the situation.
