Orillia eyes possible ban on single-use plastics
Councillor Ralph Cipolla
When Ralph Cipolla’s beloved golden doodle swallowed a piece of plastic while walking an area trail, the Orillia councillor had a choice to make.
“Put him down or a very expensive operation,” Cipolla told his colleagues this week. “We chose to do the operation.”
Cipolla recounted the incident while calling for councillors’ support to explore a potential ban on single-use plastics in Orillia.
While the problem is a global one, the city has a role to play as well, said Mayor Steve Clarke, who encountered a “horrendous amount” of waste, much of it plastic, during a volunteer cleanup of the local landscape last spring.
