Last week, the federal government announced a new policy aimed at ending international public financing for oil and gas projects. This important milestone in our work to end fossil fuel subsidies will shift billions toward clean and renewable energy – and it is starting in January!

This is a big deal. This marks a critical first step towards eliminating public spending on oil and gas and aligning with a climate-safe future. Canada is the 8th signatory to implement the pledge signed at last year’s UN climate conference (COP26). If all signatories follow through, it will shift $38 billion away from climate-harming fossil fuels and towards clean energy. Read the full press release here.

This win would not have been possible without you. This huge step towards ending international fossil fuel financing is thanks to people like you taking action to demand a clean and just transition to a renewable energy future.

The next step is to keep the pressure on Minister Guilbault to keep his promise of ending domestic fossil fuel subsidies by the middle of 2023.

For now, let’s celebrate this big win and keep advocating to end ALL fossil fuel subsidies.
