In October 2019, the Town of Collingwood declared a climate emergency and committed to making changes that would have a positive impact on the environment.

Here are five ways the town and the community are looking to make change:

1. The town has hired a climate change specialist, who will oversee the creation of a corporate and community climate change action plan — a road map for how Collingwood can do more for the environment.

2. The Canopy Collingwood Program is a project that provides financial incentives for residents to purchase and maintain trees to increase the town’s overall urban tree canopy.

3. The town is planning to purchase its third electric ice resurfacer this year to go along with four hybrid vehicles already in its fleet as part of an effort to lower the reliance on fossil fuels. The municipality also installed six electric vehicle charging stations that are open to the public.

4. Greener Collingwood is an internal staff volunteer group that implements beneficial practices across the corporation, such as waste reduction initiatives and the reduction of single-use plastics at the office.

5. Pollinate Collingwood worked with the Town of Collingwood in 2021 to become a Bee City, committing to be ecological stewards of local spaces. Benefits also include bringing sustainable food systems to the community and limiting the impacts of climate change.
