Nine years after the defeat of the proposed 2,400 acres 200 feet below the water table Mega Quarry, Melancthon Township, and surrounding communities are once again facing possible threats to their water resources and farms.

Strada Aggregates has announced it wants to expand its existing pit near Shelburne in order to extract two million tonnes of stone each year. Strada’s plans propose to quarry below the water table, something it once said it would not do. Below-the-water-table extraction would affect the groundwater flowing through the aquifer beneath the fields of Melancthon.

The defeated Mega Quarry posed a similar threat to the same aquifer, risking the drinking water for up to one million people and harming the nearby farmers who grow a bounty of food each year.

NDACT PROPOSAL to Strada on proposed Quarry Expansion

NDACT is holding a community meeting to determine support for our proposal to Strada regarding its planned application to quarry below the water table in Melancthon.

Votes will be taken during the virtual meeting by ZOOM poll.  A survey monkey poll will be available on the NDACT website after the meeting.  A chat feature during the ZOOM meeting will be enabled in order to facilitate engagement by the community.

One Response to “Public Meeting: PROPOSED Below the Water Table Quarry”

  1. It is so tiring for those who are stewards of the water, to have to continually fight those who aim to hurt the environment for their monetary gain.
Strada’s plan to quarry below the water table would be a disaster.
