New Tec candidate flip-flops on decision to drop out
By Maija Hoggett Oct 20, 2010
NEW TECUMSETH – A candidate for the Ward 1 race had announced his intentions of dropping out of the election race late last week, but has since had a change of heart.
Gary Dorland said Friday that he was dropping out of the race for northwest Alliston’s Ward 1 seat at the New Tecumseth council table due to personal reasons.
Monday, however, Dorland sent out a statement and said he will remain on the ballot Oct. 25.
“The Municipal Elections Act does not permit candidates to withdraw after nomination day,” said Dorland. “The Clerk advised me that me name would still be on the ballot and that there was no provision in the legislation to advise voters that I was not running.”
The other Ward 1 candidates are Bob Marrs, Wayne Noye and Joyce Walker.
Voting day in New Tecumseth is Monday, Oct. 25. Polling stations are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at seven locations throughout the town.
In Alliston you can vote at the Town of New Tecumseth administration building, 10 Wellington St. E., Museum on the Boyne, 250 Fletcher Cres., the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex on Industrial Parkway or at the Nottawasaga Inn on Highway 89 east of Alliston.
The voting location in Beeton is at the Beeton Fire Hall, and Tottenham’s location is at the Tottenham Community and Fitness Centre. The rural voting location is The Club at Bond Head.
Results of the election will be available on the town’s website, www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca, starting at 8 p.m. Monday night. A public monitor tracking the results will also be at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex from 8 p.m. until the results are known, which is expected to be about 9 p.m.
