In following this election campaign over the past few weeks, I am disappointed with the increasingly negative tactics employed by those attempting to defeat Mayor Doug White.
Elections should be about ideas, vision and the plans each candidate has for the future.
Even Mr. White’s staunchest critics must concede he is a man with a clear vision of where he wants to lead our town.
Four years ago, he campaigned to bring jobs and recreation to Bradford West Gwillimbury.
Isn’t that exactly what he has done?
Campaigns short of ideas and vision inevitably settle into attack mode — toss mud at the other guy and hope some of it sticks.
Rumours, half-truths and nastiness prevail, rather than informing the voters what you will do if elected.
As a former mayor, I understand better than most the unique challenges of the job.
One must have a clear idea what our residents want, develop consensus on what to do and surround oneself with staff capable of doing it.
All the while, you receive lots of criticism and little thanks.
Despite the personal attacks, Doug White has continued to stay positive and focused, never taking his eye off the ball.
This is the quality of character I look for when determining who should sit in the mayor’s chair
