PENETANGUISHENE – Once again, the citizens of Penetanguishene are being called upon to vote in a town council. And, once again, the citizens of Penetanguishene are being denied the right to vote for the candidate of their choice. The present council has voted to keep in place an archaic ward system that splits the town in to two wards. The boundaries of the Town of Penetanguishene are too small to warrant a ward system, as opposed to larger municipalities where the system has some merit.
It is not a prerequisite that a candidate live in a ward in order to represent its constituents, in fact all seven candidates could live in the same neighborhood and be elected.
To the best of my knowledge, I can’t remember a single decision made by council where the ward designation came into play.
The ward system is not used in any shape or form by the administration in running the town. Apparently the only reason the council voted to retain the ward system is that it is easier for the candidates to campaign leading up to the election. A person can’t want the job too badly if they are not willing to put forth a little effort every four years.
I would like to remind the electorate that although it won’t indicate on the ballot when it comes to putting your ‘X’ beside your choice for Mayor or Deputy Mayor, you are at the same time electing that person to the Simcoe County Council.
In closing, I don’t believe the ward system in Penetanguishene is necessary and it should be abolished. Let’s do something progressive and get rid of it and elect all of our politicians at large.
Bob Paradis, Penetanguishene
