The hunt for food in a land of plenty: Orillia group puts us on the map
Sustainable Orillia creates food map and directory

Even in a land of plenty, securing healthy, affordable food can prove a challenge for many in the community.
The coronavirus pandemic has only served to intensify that difficult reality as physical distancing measures bring lineups outside grocery stores, where staff are working to keep shelves stocked amid constant demand.
In a timely initiative, Sustainable Orillia has produced an easy-to-read map and directory detailing the broad range of food sources available to residents.
“There are people of limited resources and income who need to source food, just as all of us do,” said group member Mike Douglas, who helped develop the map with his wife, Anna Bourgeois.

Included are grocery stores, food banks, meal programs, community kitchens and gardens, along with community service agencies and student food ‘lockers’ at Lakehead University and Georgian College.
Hello AWARE Simcoe,
We wanted to thank you for running the article in AWARE Simcoe promoting the availability of the Sustainable Orillia, Orillia Food Map & Directory 2020.
Drawing attention to the ongoing challenge of solving food security within Orillia and the surrounding smaller communities is just one of the many Sustainable Orillia strategies focused on, “mitigating adverse changes to our community”.
Regards,
Mike Douglas & Anna Bourgeois, for the Agriculture and Natural Capital Sector of Sustainable Orillia
