Following up on a recent request for feedback from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), Barrie councillors say they’re prepared to transition the city’s blue-box program to a full-producer-responsibility model by May 1, 2024.
While there are still quite a few details to hash out, the commitment is the first step toward the municipality holding companies that design, create and market products and packaging to account for the recyclables they create.
This position was taken at a general committee meeting Jan. 20, which means it needs to be formally ratified by council next week. Any change to the recycling program would also depend on the successful negotiation of an extension to the existing waste-collection contract; Barrie’s deal expires April 30, though there is an option to extend it by four years.
“The transition to full producer responsibility for packaging, paper and paper products is critical to reducing waste, improving recycling, and driving better economic and environmental outcomes,” Mayor Jeff Lehman said.
