Flags are flying at half-mast at Oro-Medonte’s township hall after Coun. Scott Macpherson died Nov. 6.
A statement from the township said Macpherson passed away following a prolonged illness.
Macpherson, 71, was elected to his second term as Ward 2 councillor last year, was vice-president of the Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte provincial Conservative riding association, and served as vice-chairman of the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
…As Ward 2 councillor, Macpherson was active at community events and spearheaded a $20,000 private investment for the new sports pad at Warminster Park. He also served as a member of the Eady Community Hall Board.
…Perhaps his most controversial issue as a councillor came when he spoke out against a policy naming the mayor and senior management as official spokespersons on municipal issues.
“There wasn’t that kind of suppression of free thought and free speech (when I was school trustee),” he told Simcoe.com in 2016.
