The Cleanest Water on Earth: is it worth protecting? That will be the theme when Dr. William Shotyk, Bocock Chair for Agriculture and the Environment at the University of Alberta, presents to Tay Township Council some research highlights from the past 30 years of scientific study of the artesian flow systems of the area.

In 2010, Schindler’s studies showed emissions from upgraders and mining are causing increasing levels of heavy metal pollution in the Athabasca watershed at a distance from the plants. Federal studies have since confirmed those findings.
By contrast, Shotyk and his team found “no significant atmospheric contamination of heavy metals” with a study of moss samples rather than the snow melt used by Schindler.
