from Friends of Simcoe Forests

After over a year of silence, no sufficient responses to questions and concerns, FSF just became aware of an upcoming County Council meeting in regards to the ERRC proposed for the Freele forest.

The County is spearheading this project and attempting to change their own Official Plan to include the Waste Facility in the middle of the Freele County Forest.

Yes, this is the same forest identified to have the following Natural Heritage Features PRESENT ON THE SITE.
~ Significant Woodlands
~ Significant Wetlands
~ Significant Wildlife Habitat (SWH)
~ Habitat of Endangered AND Threatened Species
This appears to be superseding the planning process for a Township rezoning under the planning act. If this amendment goes through, it could negate the rezoning application as the Official Plan (OP) use will be allowed.

This appears to be nothing more than greedy tactics by The County to silence the public, the community, community groups and the most startling of all….The local Municipality which is this case is the Township of Springwater.

If you missed Wednesday evenings Springwater Council meeting, our councillors voted unanimously in favour of a motion put forward by Deputy Don Allen. This motion is basically asking that the County’s consultants hold a public meeting well in advance of any OP amendment to address concerns to which responses were never provided by the County or were not sufficient. This motion should also be on the table for discussion at Tuesdays County meeting.

What can you do?
Attend the County meeting.
