Simcoe North provincial election candidates will get a chance to pitch their platforms to the public on May 23.

The Southern Georgian Bay Chamber of Commerce is hosting an all candidates meeting at the Midland Cultural Centre at 5:30 p.m. where the four local candidate will get one last chance to sway voters.

Progressive Conservative Jill Dunlop, Liberal Gerry Marshal, NDP Elizabeth Van Houtte and the Green Party’s Valerie Powell will be on hand to answer a series of set questions and concerns before finishing with closing remarks.

The public may submit their questions prior to the meeting at info@sgbchamber.ca or in writing at the meeting. All questions will be reviewed and selected by the moderator, who will be facilitating the meeting on behalf of the chamber.

  1. Anna Romano says:

“We question why additional protections are required in these areas beyond what is already provided in the County’s greenlands designation, agricultural and rural land OP policies, and the Province’s own source water protection plans, Lake Simcoe Protection policies, and the new natural heritage and agricultural mapping. As the local planning authority, it is our view that these existing protections are adequate and appropriate.

“We would certainly be open to discussing these types of more sensitive matters more privately with the Minister or his senior staff, rather than continue to make it the fodder of those that seek conflict rather than solutions.

“We would like the opportunity to move forward with the business of planning for our future growth and prosperity on the current policy framework set by the Province – let us finish our good work in tandem with you, without further changes in process and policy at this time. We do not believe that a Greenbelt boundary expansion is prudent or required at this time.

“If the Province deems that they do wish to consider furher expansion in our region, we strongly request that you only do so with meaningful face to face two way dialogue with Simcoe County.”

These are Gerry Marshall’s submissions as Warden in part re. Greenbelt Expansion Proposal.
