Weather factors during the first week of January that impacted waste collection across the County delayed potential impacts from new bag limit restrictions at curbside that came into effect January 1.

Specifically, the County’s collection service now will pick up one untagged bag, and a new limit up to three tagged bags, which is down from seven untagged. It applies across the County and to all properties.

Willma Bureau, Contract & Collections Supervisor told Free Press Online in an email this afternoon they did not anticipate much of an impact on the average household.

“However, industrial, commercial and institutional (IC&I) locations currently receiving County garbage collection service would be more likely to be impacted by the change. It is important to note that IC&I locations are not mandated for collection by the County,” wrote Ms. Bureau, noting those impacted “could potentially meet the more restrictive limit by more actively participating in all of the available diversion programs.”

“It is important to note, particularly with respect to downtown locations, is that many properties are mixed use – commercial and residential,” she said. “In this case, the residential component of the property, which we are mandated to service, would continue to receive collection in addition to one commercial unit. For example a ground floor store with an apartment above would be eligible for two untagged bags per week (one for the store and one for the apartment) and up to six tagged bags (three for each unit).”
