World-renowned author and Midhurst Ratepayers’ patron, Margaret Atwood, whose dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale is garnering rave reviews and awards for its TV adaptation, has issued a fundraising challenge to everyone who thinks fresh and plentiful water, prime farmland, pristine cold-water fisheries and the unique MInesing Wetlands – are worth fighting for! Atwood will match every donation up to $5,000 until Dec. 31st.

As she puts it ….

“In my global travels, I’ve seen first-hand the power of small communities to safeguard their best interests. Local residents step forward with solutions to save what they – and most reasonable people – value most. Right now, I see the folks in the small rural village of Midhurst working hard to protect their water, an internationally important wetland, the Minesing Wetlands – famed for its biodiversity – and prime farmland from rampant sprawl. This looming disaster could also send sewage overflow into beautiful Georgian Bay. Here’s your chance to help the “little guy” in a cause I support. Until Dec. 31st, I will match every dollar donated to the MRA up to $5,000.

In my experience, these battles truly are David vs Goliath. Let’s even the playing field so that David can win!”

MRA President Sandy Buxton says “Our cause is about protecting the basics – public health, food security, environmental preservation and well-being. These are needs and values important to everyone.. We simply MUST stop the enormous mega-development – 10,000 homes – slated for rural Midhurst before irreparable harm is done.”

Midhurst resident Connie Spek adds “This fight is not over! We have to do everything we can to protect our water and to leave an environment worth having for future generations. We owe it to them to be good ancestors.”
