In September of 2000 I relocated to Alliston to take the position of Grain Division Manager with Simcoe District Co-operative Services and was located at the Grain elevator in Beeton. Over the past seventeen years there have been numerous changes and amalgamations in ownership which presently is FSPartners a wholly owned subsidiary o fGrowmark Inc. FS Partners continues to be an Agricultural Co-operative as is our parent company which is US based.

My primary function at this time is working with our Farmer members to through diligent marketing achieve the best possible returns for their grain crops. Through our grain marketing division Great Lakes Grain we would handle close to 50 million bushels of grain in a year from Ontario. Much of this grain is handled through our elevator system however we do a lot of “Off Farm Direct” for those producers with their own storage. Although my focus is primarily on grain we are a full service cooperative with both an Agronomy and Energy division.

This covers a little of the present and as for the past, 2018 will give me about 50 years in agriculture and grain related businesses. After a few years in construction as a foreman I started with a flour milling company at the bottom of the ladder as a clerk in a Montreal Flour Mill. Over a 25 year period of working in most all capacities in the national organization I ended up as General Manager for ADM Milling located in Medicine Hat Alberta. My progression through the organization took me from the mill to our Montreal Head office which led to positions in traffic, sales, purchasing and distribution. Then on to Medicine Hat Alberta in Plant Management followed by a move to Strathroy, Ontario as Plant Manager and subsequently back to Medicine Hat. In this last post our company was acquired by a large US company ADM Milling and I was then General Manager covering all responsibility for operations west of Winnipeg Manitoba.

Over my career in industry aside from always being able to work in agriculture with farmers I believe one of my abilities that was expanded was that of negotiation. Some of my participation is as follows:
– Successful negotiation of 10 union collective agreements
– Negotiation of numerous provincial and national rail rates
– Negotiation of storage, handling & distribution rates for multiple location across Canada – Negotiation of supply contracts for raw materials, ingredients & packaging materials
– Negotiation of local, provincial & national rates with truckers.

Subsequent to my work in the milling industry I did return to the east (Home) to spend some time with family and did get back into grain when I joined the Cooperative system in Embrun Ontario as Grain Division Manager.

One strong belief I have had and endeavored to follow throughout my career is that one needs to give back to the community they choose to be a part of. To this end I have participated as follows:

In Montreal
– I served on the board of the Montreal Traffic Club
– I served as chairman of the first “Transportation Blood Donor Clinic”

In Strathroy
– I joined the local Lions Club whose motto is “We Serve”. I progressed through the offices and was honored to serve as District Governor 1983-84
– I accepted a public appointment to the local Sports & Recreation Commission
– I served on the local “Junior B Hockey Club” Executive as Treasurer
– I served for 3 years as chairman of a Civic fund raising group raising renovation money
for the local sports complex In Medicine Hat
– I served for a number of years on the board of directors of The United Way of Medicine Hat

In Alliston
– I presently serve on our local condominium board in Greenbrier
– I served as the representative from agriculture on the recently disbanded Economic
Advisory Board for New Tecumseth
In summary the reason I am seeking the appointment for councilor Ward 5 is that with my previous business experience and specifically my ties to agriculture I can best represent the constituents of this ward for the balance of this term. A very large number of the Ward 5 residents are both my customers and friends whom I have been working with for the past 17 years.
