There was a celebration Thursday by the side of a country road, just west of a large wetland, to mark  the Huronia Land Conservancy’s first nature reserve. After refreshments, conservancy chair Tim Tully welcomed local dignitaries, directors and area residents.

“This lovely property is why we are here,” he said. “It embodies the on-going dream of a group of dedicated volunteers who got together in 2009 to create the Huronia Land Conservancy… this stunning wetland – the Hogg Creek Wetland – the first of what we hope to be many properties to be protected and conserved in perpetuity.”

Among those present were former MPP Garfield Dunlop, representing local MPP Patrick Brown, Springwater Mayor Bill French, and Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes.

“This legacy would not have happened without the contributions of a number of individuals, community businesses and organizations as well as government support,” Tully noted.

Those that contributed to the 43-acre acquisition included the Ontario Trillium Foundation,  the federal EcoGift program, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Elmvale Lions Club as well as the Tackla and Echo Foundations.

“The conservation legacy and permanent stewardship of this property would not have been possible without these groups,” Tully said.
