There are so many Issues going on in Simcoe County it’s hard to know where to start.

The Ontario Municipal Board hearing for the debacle of Burl’s Creek Event Grounds concluded several weeks ago. So a decision should be coming out soon. With all the illegal activities, fines and zoning violations incurred by this invasion of Oro-Medonte it’s hard to imagine how the OMB could possible approve it. However we all know the many horrendous decisions that have come from this government agency over the years so anything is possible. Much credit goes to SaveOro http://saveoro.com/ for standing up for the rights of residents and the rule of law.

Concerned Citizens of Adjala-Tosorontio are heavily engaged in fighting a huge expansion to a gravel pit in their township. Once again local citizens have rallied to challenge this application that will have serious repercussions to the local water, air, traffic and lives of the residents. See the CCAT website at http://www.nogravelpit.com/.

There is also an application for expansion of a gravel pit in Tiny Township. So far Tiny Council seems more responsive to the concerns raised by the local residents than some other councils have been. Apparent effects on local wells are already being raised by neighbours.

The Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition continues to promote the expansion of the Greenbelt into Simcoe County. Recently SCGC sponsored a presentation by Kevin Eby, retired planning director for Waterloo Region. Kevin refers to the development sprawl that’s been taking place across southern Ontario as a Ponzi scheme. Municipalities keep approving more development to try to pay for previous development. Of course that just digs the hole of debt deeper.

SCGC is holding another event with presentations by Wayne Caldwell, a professor at U of Guelph and Avia Eek, a vegetable farmer and councillor on King Township. SCGC also plans to make deputations to local councils with information about why Simcoe County needs the Greenbelt. We just received Greenbelt lawns which are available to plant on your lawn to help promote the Greenbelt. If you’d like one please give me a call at 705-835-6824. And please check out the website http://www.simcoecountygreenbelt.ca/.

A Zero Waste conference is being held on June 15-16 at Lakehead University in Orillia. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Glenn Murray will be the keynote speaker. The conference will provide a forum to learn about the Waste-Free Ontario Act passed a few months ago by the province. To find out more visit http://zerowasteontarioconference.ca/. Of course the opinions expressed in my blogs are mine alone and don’t necessarily represent any organization.
