Watershed-focused seminar to wrap up The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust’s year-long Silver Creek Stewardship Initiative

New release from Blue Mountain Watershed Trust

If you have ever wondered what stewardship looks like in action, here’s your chance to find out. Come to the Collingwood Library from 10:30 to 12:30 on February 11th, where Collingwood’s Blue Mountain Watershed Trust is holding a seminar on preserving the ecology of the Niagara Escarpment.

The seminar, entitled Preserving the Ecology of the Niagara Escarpment Within a Near-Urban Setting: Lessons From Hamilton/Burlington and Collingwood/Blue Mountain, comes on the heels of nearly a year’s stewardship work conducted on the Silver Creek, which flows from Lake of the Clouds through The Blue Mountains and Collingwood, joining Georgian Bay at the Silver Creek Wetland.

The seminar will begin with an overview presentation by Peter Kelly on the major trends associated with the unique and successful Cootes to Escarpment Eco-Park System. Carl Michener will then discuss the highlights of the BMWT project on Silver Creek, and how its ecology can be protected by an effective landowner stewardship system.

The second part of the seminar will be a round-table discussion that will explore a number of important themes within the context of the Near-Urban experiences of Hamilton/Burlington and Collingwood/ Blue Mountains. Both these projects have profited from grants provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

About The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation

The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation (Watershed Trust), Ontario’s first watershed trust, was founded in 1994. During the past 20 years, the Watershed Trust has dedicated itself to the task of protecting the Silver Creek and its Wetland, one of the region’s most valuable natural features. The Silver Creek Watershed offers $10.5 million worth of non-market ecological services to the province each year.

The mandate of the Watershed Trust is to “develop awareness and promote partnerships that are required in order to successfully implement watershed planning in the Blue Mountain watersheds”. It is a grassroots, all-volunteer organization supported by donations and fundraising. The organization exists in order to raise awareness of and protect watercourses in the Collingwood/Blue Mountains area including Silver, Townline, Batteaux and Black Ash Creeks; the Beaver and Pretty Rivers; and Indian Brook.
