Town staff tout flexibility, elimination of barriers

Midland residents may have a new way to have their voice heard in the upcoming municipal election.
Town staff are recommending a transition to an online/telephone voting method for the 2018 election.
“This method offers the greatest in terms of accessibility, flexibility and convenience,” acting clerk Karen Desroches wrote in a report for council. “It eliminates barriers to those with disabilities, and voters can vote any time of day or night.”

Midland council is going to look at issues surrounding the 2018 municipal election, but moving toward a new voting system seems unlikely.
At a meeting of its general committee Jan. 9, council heard from Tristin McCredie of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs on the Ontario government’s recent decision to allow the province’s 444 municipalities to use ranked ballots in elections, replacing the current first-past-the-post system.
