Today Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, Bill Mauro, said “no” to the DG Group’s request for permission to build a subdivision on prime farmlands in the Greenbelt between Deer Park and Boyers Roads in the Town of Georgina.

DG Group was seeking to trade the Maple Lake Estates’ wetlands and forests, which are undevelopable under Ontario’s current land-use rules, for permission to build a 1,073 house subdivision on prime Greenbelt farmland.

Minister Mauro took an important stand in turning down hundreds of requests driven by developers to have lands removed from the Greenbelt. Instead, he made a few minor boundary adjustments and kept one of our best defences against costly urban sprawl intact.

But while Minister Mauro has made a historic decision to protect the integrity of the Greenbelt for future generations, there is more that must be done to protect Lake Simcoe and its watershed. It is time for Minister Mauro to use his authority to protect Maple Lake Estates’ provincially significant wetlands forever.

Please contact Minister Mauro and thank him for protecting the integrity of the Greenbelt by saying “no” to a huge developer. This is the type of strong political leadership on behalf of the public interest that Ontario needs. Please also inform Minister Mauro that you hope that he will also take the necessary action to protect the MLE’s provincially significant wetland forever.
