Applause greeted Simcoe County Warden Gerry Marshall at a ceremony Tuesday afternoon as he was acclaimed to lead county council for a second two-year term
Marshall said he has grown very passionate about the role and was ready to fight for the position if another council member stepped forward.

“I was like a dog with a bone. I wasn’t going to give it up without a fight,” said Marshall, the mayor of Penetanguishene.

County council elects a new warden and deputy warden every two years. Marshall will once again lead alongside Deputy Warden Terry Dowdall, Mayor of Essa, who retained his position in a challenge against Springwater Mayor Bill French.

In a speech to county council Tuesday, Dowdall said if re-elected he would help implement the county’s vision.

In an interview Wednesday, French said Springwater’s best interests are his top priority.

“I would choose the township, no question because the township residents are the ones who elected me,” he said.

French said he didn’t win the deputy warden seat because he raises issues on county council.
