Midland council looking toward 2018 election

MIDLAND – The next municipal election is nearly two years away, but Midland council is beginning to look at possibilities for the future – including ranked ballots and the end of the ward system.

Councillors considered a staff report on elections at Monday’s general committee meeting. The province recently made several changes to the Municipal Act, giving municipalities the freedom to move to ranked balloting, a system in which voters get to number their choices for mayor and council

Despite confirming their support for the existing first-past-the-post system, councillors pointed out changes could be made as election legislation is considered in the future.

Coun. Stewart Strathearn said he does not want Midland to be a “guinea pig for the province” in testing out a new system.

“I suspect no other municipality does, either,” he said. “But council could reconsider this decision.”
