Time is Running Out to Save Our Village

From the Midhurst Ratepayers’ Association

Thank you for signing our petition urging Premier Wynne to stop the proposed mega-sprawl development in Midhurst which would replace the historic rural charm of our village of 3,500 with a “Legocity” the size of Orillia (30,000 people). With your participation, we accumulated over 45,000 names! We’ve gained a LOT of ground thanks to YOU!

Recently, we learned that the required environmental studies will be completed by early fall. Our team of scientists tell us these studies are inadequate: they don’t address key issues that are fundamental to human well-being and safety. Issues such as the effects on:

* the UN-ranked Minesing Wetlands, whose amazing biodiversity ranks on a par with the Florida Everglades and which serves as both a natural water filter and flood abatement system for a large region stretching to Georgian Bay. Not to mention all the carbon it captures!

* drinking water – surely a basic human right. Will it be clean enough to drink? Will there BE enough?

* the local vibrant agricultural industry – paving over almost 2000 acres of the highest quality farmland in Canada with a food security crisis looming seems short-sighted to us.

Please help us pay for crucial independent studies which will be sure to alarm the government and the expertise to present them in a compelling fashion. The facts we will present are those the developers don’t want the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change to see. Without OUR input, bad decisions based on insufficient and biased information could be made that will irrevocably alter the nature of our large ecosystem and the heritage character of our community.

Do fresh water and productive farmland matter more to you than stupidly located urban sprawl and developer greed?

Please chip in whatever you can afford to help us WIN this important fight for the rights of wetlands, pristine streams, farmland and a pioneer rural village. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

We’re so close! Help us reach the finish line. Margaret Atwood and other people of influence are still in our corner. Are you?

Thank you for your support. We and the environment here appreciate it.
