Simcoe County Warden Gerry Marshall was elected Vice-Chair of the Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (WOWC) at its Annual General Meeting held in Chatham on February 12.

Warden Marshall, who is mayor of Penetanguishene, will continue to head up the SWIFT (South Western Integrated Fibre Technology) Connectivity initiative, whose goal is to expand “ubiquitous, affordable and accessible regional ultra-high speed broadband network regardless of population density.”

Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy R. Hope was also re-acclaimed as WOWC Chair for 2016 and Wellington County Warden George Bridge was elected as Vice Chair responsible for Economic Development initiatives.

According to its web site, WOWC is a not-for-profit organization representing 14 counties and Chatham-Kent in western Ontario, who “work collectively to influence federal, provincial and municipal legislative, regulatory and program initiatives through advocacy, research and analysis and education.”

  1. David Strachan says:

    Congratulations to Warden Gerry Marshall.

I believe that SWIFT is a commendable initiative. It is important that everyone in the 21st century, regardless of location, should have adequate connection to the internet. Where this may not be economically feasible for the private sector, I believe that carefully negotiated government subsidies are appropriate.

Benefits to those in low density areas include access to news and information, on-line banking and the possibility to work from home, thus reducing unemployment and long distance commutes.
