While municipal leaders pull for the resurrection of a mothballed plan to build a bypass between highways 404 and 400, an environmental lawyer says the idea is outdated.
Laura Bowman said she’s disappointed York Region and Simcoe County mayors are reverting back to a transportation option that will create more pollution, increase commuter traffic congestion and encourage urban sprawl.
“It seems that we are stuck in the 1950s in Ontario when it comes to how we think of highways,” she said. “We know for sure that when you build highways they don’t solve congestion.”
Bowman, an East Gwillimbury resident who helped fight the bypass in the past, said it’s proven that building more highways simply creates more traffic congestion.
“You can see that with the northern extension of Hwy. 404. It’s already congested,” she said.
