Less garbage headed to landfill in Orillia

A switch to bi-weekly garbage collection has cut the amount of trash placed curbside by nearly a quarter over the same period last year.

The change was instituted in October as part of a larger effort to encourage greater use of the city’s recycling and organics collection programs.

“For the first two months of every-other-week garbage collection, we have already seen a 22 per cent drop in the amount of garbage being collected at the curb,” said Greg Preston, manager of waste management. “It is already having its intended effect of cutting the amount of garbage going to the landfill.”

The city has fielded numerous calls from residents seeking tips on how to trim their trash output in the wake of the switch to bi-weekly collection.
