News release from City of Orillia

Hit Orillia’s roads and trails with Mayor Steve Clarke on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. for the Mayor’s Bike and Hike. Formerly called the Orillia Bicycle Rally, this event, organized by the City of Orillia’s Active Transportation Committee, is now in its eighth year.

“An active community is a healthy community,” said Mayor Clarke. “I am a firm believer in leaving the car behind and using active transportation whenever I can. Join me as we promote this active lifestyle in Orillia.”

Participants can bike, rollerblade, skateboard, walk, jog or roll in the event. There are three routes to choose from. Each route will visit the Highway 12 underpass located along Orillia’s Old Rail Trail south of James Street, where roughly 100 feet of tunnel is being transformed with an Active Transportation mural on both sides. This Orillia Street Art Project was initiated by the Active Transportation Committee in conjunction with the Orillia Youth Centre and supported by the City of Orillia. Funding for the paint was provided by a grant from the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area.

Participants of the Mayor’s Bike and Hike are asked to meet in the parking lot behind City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 to be organized into groups for a 6 p.m. departure. Those who cannot attend the event are encouraged to use active transportation throughout the day by walking or riding to and from work, when out for errands, or to unwind during or after your day.
