Simcoe County will host a public information session on the replacement of the Collingwood Street Bridge, Wednesday, May 13.

The meeting will be held at the Creemore Arena from 4 until 7 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public about the upcoming construction, and design of the new bridge.

The county went ahead with awarding the contract for the bridge last Thursday, after Clearview Township councillors turned down an offer to take ownership of the bridge, along with a $934,000 cheque.

The township had asked for $1.5 million to help with the costs of restoring the single-lane steel truss bridge that crosses the Mad River and was built in 1913.

The county will be replacing it with a two-lane concrete structure, though it intends to use the steel trusses as an aesthetic nod to the bridge’s heritage.

The cost of construction will be about $1.7 million. The work is expected to begin in mid-July.
