Mayor’s race entries double at last minute, elections in every ward

Four candidates are vying to replace three-term incumbent mayor Mike MacEachern, whose time in office ticks down to the October 27the municipal elections, after nominations closed Friday at 2 pm.

Within in the final moments of that deadline, New Tecumseth firefighter Damon Corbet, and Alliston lawyer Kevin Kemp filed to run for Mayor, joining current deputy mayor Rick Milne, and Ward 1 councillor Bob Marrs on the ballot. The winner also claims one of the two Simcoe County council seats.

The race for Deputy Mayor was unchanged at the filing deadline with Ward 2 councillor Jamie Smith, Glen O’Leary, and Peter Barbati seeking to replace Mr. Milne. The deputy mayor also has a seat at County council.

Ward 1 remained unchanged at deadline with Wayne Noye, Fabio Lamanna, Marc Biss, and Glen Ackerman, running to replace Mr. Marrs.

Ward 2 grew by one, with Frank Rogers filing before the 2 pm cutoff. He joins Michael Beattie, Gord McInnes, and Laurie Mortimer, seeking to fill the incumbent vacancy left by Mr. Smith.

Ward 3 has three candidates, including incumbent Paul Whiteside being challenged by Paul Foster, and Cam Simone.

Ward 4 Incumbent Fran Sainsbury, is facing Rob Katzman.

Ward 5 Incumbent Donna Jebb was the lone candidate since January 29th, but will now run against Frank Forrest who registered at the deadline.

Ward 6 Richard Norcross is council’s longest serving member after Mr. Milne, and is being challenged by Terry Garvin, and Doug Kowalinski, who jumped in Friday afternoon.

Ward 7 Shira Harrison McIntyre, Jess Prothero, Guy Bonney, and Glen Wiley are the four candidates vying to replace incumbent Bruce Haire, who is not seeking reelection.

Ward 8 was unchanged at deadline with incumbent Jim Stone looking to hold his seat against Bo Neiderhuber, and Chris Ross. Mr. Neiderhuber is the only candidate of the 32 seeking election in New Tecumseth who does not live in the municipality. He resides in Adjala-Tosorontio.

Advance votes will be held over six days next month, beginning October 11th.
