BWG mayoral candidate and Deputy Mayor Rob Keffer pledged to not to accept developer dollars and to only accept money from local sources. He also pledged to post online, donations over $200. Since he sent out his challenge one other mayoral candidate, Hernan Burgos and two council candidates Ron Orr and Peter Ferragine have agreed to this. None of the incumbents have. The Mayor, Doug White said he doesn’t accept developer money, except his campaign statements tell a different story.

The fact that this pledge got such a strong response on Facebook shows how disgusted voters are with our politicians answering to masters other than the electorate.

We discuss endlessky why people don’t vote. They don’t vote because they think their vote is meaningless. As long as politicians take money from developers and other special interests our votes don’t mean much when it comes to those special interests’ concerns.

It should be illegal for municipal candidates to take money from developers, corporations or unions. They also should not take donations from sources outside their jurisdiction. All large donations should be made public so we can see if we think politicians have bias. Hopefully this will spread to other communities and begin a tradition of transparent elections.

So to Rob Keffer and those who have taken his pledge, good luck, we need more like you. To those that haven’t, shame on you. What are you hiding?
