Report of January 9 Tiny Township Council meeting
By Vickie Kee AWARE Tiny January 11 2012
Council received an update on nitrate problems at Lafontaine and Georgian Sands from R.J. Burnside and Associates Ltd. The Georgian Sands reservoir, which is a mix of three wells, will be added to the Lafontaine well to lower the nitrate level.
Councillor Warren states that there are a number of wells in Lafontaine that have no problem with nitrates. Perhaps they could go deeper with their testing. He then mentions that Burnside needs to stay in contact with the MOE
on this issue.
Lawrence, Millar clash
Deputy-Mayor Lawrence brought forward a discussion on Facility Advertising and Promotion Policy. He wants changes to this policy so that there can be some sponsors brought forward, such as Molsons, to raise money for the Lafontaine Rec Centre. As the policy stands now, beer and cigarette advertisements are not allowed on township property meaning none around the boards at a hockey rink.
Councillor Wishart comments that he would never support advertising beer companies to children.
A frustrated Lawrence says all he is asking for is a simple logo. He angrily withdraws his request.
Mayor Miller tells Lawrence to be more professional about the handling of this issue which sets off some angry words between them.
Lawrence says that he refuses to vote and Warren and Claire say that they will vote for the Molson logo.
No resolution was put forward so this issue was dropped.
Apparently, there has been three sponsor signs approved for the Lafontaine Rec Centre, says a staff member. It’s too bad that this info was not given out to the councilllors before the meeting. This anger and frustration could have been avoided!
Source water protection
The Source Water Protection Plan to protect municipal water supplies will be in place by August 2012. Forty-six wells
and well heads have been identified within the township.
Update on proposed wind turbines for Christian Island
Apparently, Beausoleil First Nation are not ready to meet with council because they are only on phase one of the project.
