Objection letter to the Open Pit Mine application in Dufferin
Highland Companies head office address is a mailbox in Hamilton
Letter to AWARE Simcoe April 18 2011
Ladies and Gentlemen,
You will be aware of the massive open pit mine application in Melanchton Township, the biggest one ever filed in Ontario, likely the second biggest in North America.
Not only does it want to extract 200 ft below the water table, but will also destroy 2400 acres of horticultural soil. Unlimited tonnage, 3.600 trucks each loaded with about 45 tonnes of aggregate and 3,600 empty trucks coming back every day, 7 days per week except on statutory holidays.
They plan to “manage” 600 Million liters of fresh water everyday!
This is not a typo on my part. You can view the application at their website. www.highlandcompanies.ca
My name is Carl Cosack and I am a cattle rancher and cowboy in the neighbouring Township of Mulmur. I have tried to read the 3100 plus pages of application and have not found the answers to the questions in the enclosed letter. Please read the letter and see how many problem areas are in this application.
Thank you kindly for your attention and due diligence on this.
And to think that their Head Office address, as listed in papers filed with the provincial government, is 1063 King Street West, Hamilton Ontario, Suite 234. I visited that address to look for the president of the proponent, John Lowndes of the Highland Companies, and it is a UPS store and Suite 234 is a mailbox there. That just does not instill confidence in me at all.
Please take a look at the letter and help where you can.
AWARE Simcoe note: Comments on the application are due by April 26 2011 (get them in by April 21 if possible because of Easter delays) and must be submitted to:
