News release from Sierra Club Ontario December 17 2010
Sierra Club Ontario is pleased to announce the creation of the Great Lakes Section of SCO. Led by veteran Great Lakes advocate Mary Muter and comprised of Sierra Club members with specific experience and focus on Great Lakes issues, the new section will address the multiple components of the Great Lakes ecosystem with emphasis on water quantity and quality.
Sierra Club’s substantial body of work on the Great Lakes in both Canada and the United States includes a leading role in the agreement of Great Lakes jurisdictions to ban new diversions of water out of the basin. The Great Lakes Section will participate in the Club’s Binational Great Lakes Committee, Sierra Club’s cross border Great Lakes coordination group. The Sierra Club Ontario Chapter Office will be the secretariat for the Great Lakes Section.
In addition to Mary Muter, the Great Lakes Section includes experts in the fields of engineering, wetlands and fisheries biology and Great Lakes hydrology. Section members have many years of Great Lakes experience that will contribute to the Club’s stewardship of the largest fresh water lake system in the world. Sierra Club Ontario is confident that new section will significantly enhance the Club’s Great Lakes work and extends an enthusiastic welcome to Mary Muter and her colleagues in our new Great Lakes section.
