Election night in Springwater saw a nearly complete overhaul, starting at the top.
Former councillor Linda Collins was elected mayor, replacing Tony Guergis, who spent the last four years as Springwater’s mayor.
Collins said she was humbled by the strong victory, defeating second-place finisher Bill French by nearly 1500 votes. Unofficial results had Collins at 3203 votes and French at 1863. Guergis finished a distant third with 615 votes.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me and supported me,” Collins said. “Congratulations to everyone who ran, it takes a lot of guts and bravery.”
Collins and councillor Dan Clement are the only two remaining from the previous council, and the new mayor said that first on her agenda is to begin building relationships with the new councillors.
“The first thing is to develop trust,” she said, adding that it’s the easiest and hardest thing to do because it can start off great but the trust needs to last four years.
During those four years Collins said that the big issues will be planned growth and, as usual, taxes.
The numbers took a while to come in. At 8 pm when polls were supposed to close polling stations in Elmvale and Minesing had lines over 100 deep.
After learning of the victory Collins celebrated with her supporters at Snow Valley Resort.
