Alliston Herald October 20 2010
As promised to our readers, The Herald is endorsing the candidates we see best fit for municipal council in the townships of Adjala-Tosorontio and Essa.
Our selection criteria was laid out in the Oct. 7 Weekend Herald, so we won’t go into great detail on that again.
To read the criteria, please click here.
We are not listing anything negative about the candidates we didn’t select, only the qualities for the top picks that make them stand out.
These are merely our choices and this slate is in no way intended to sway our readers’ votes. It’s more important that you take part in the process than vote for candidates endorsed here.
Township of Adjala-Tosorontio
Mayor
Our choice to pick a mayor was tough. Let’s face it: the township has been in good hands with Tom Walsh at the helm. He’s hardworking and sensible.
Deputy mayor This position was acclaimed by Mary Small Brett.
Ward 1
For Ward 1, William Boston has our vote. Not only does he have council experience (from 2003 to 2006), he’s also served on the township’s planning advisory committee. This gives him the edge over his fellow candidates.
Ward 2
In Ward 2 we give the nod to Ambrose (Sam) Keenan. His professional experience will likely aid him as councillor, and based on his speeches at the recent candidates meetings, he was on message and came across focused, determined, and ready to hit the ground running.
Ward 3
Voters have two options in Ward 3, and quite frankly, you can’t lose either way. Both Doug Little and Ray Wallace have a proven track record. They are well-liked and well-respected by the community and have the experience for the job.
Ward 4 This position was acclaimed by Tom Gauley.
Ward 5
In Ward 5 Scott Anderson is exactly what council desperately needs – a fresh jolt of energy and representation of a younger generation. He’s not the most “experienced” candidate, but he will make a good fit and comes across as the kind of person who will work well with the veterans of council.
Essa Township
Mayor
Essa Township would be best served by Terry Dowdall as mayor. His record, integrity and values speak for themselves. We have the utmost confidence in Dowdall’s ability to lead this township in the right direction for the next four years.
Deputy mayor
There are two strong candidates for deputy mayor. Both Sandie Macdonald and Shawn Bubel appear to be equally qualified to be the township’s second in command.
Ward 1
Our Ward 1 pick goes to Archie Duckworth. You would be hard-pressed to find another candidate who displays the same passion and outspoken sensitively when it comes to municipal issues that will shape the future of the township.
Ward 2
In Ward 2, Rick Newlove gets our nod of approval. The incumbent councillor, who sits on various boards and committees, is more than qualified for the job, with 30 years of working in municipal government.
Ward 3
Our vote for Ward 3 goes to Ron Henderson. Again, this incumbent is the logical choice. He has fulfilled his duties as councillor and has over 14 years of council and committee experience to back it up.
