Letter from Stephen Ogden – September 30 2010
Driving through Elmvale it’s very obvious Tony Guergis is seeking re-election to the position of Mayor. Although I do not live in Springwater Township I received a letter from Mayor Guergis dated June 14, 2007, regarding Site 41, that said, “residents and businesses alike (existing and potential) that the negative messaging and connotations created by those opposed to this technically approved site, has actually done more to negatively impact our communities than the development of any type of waste management facility could have ever done – something to think about.”

I personally have not had that type of reaction to trying to protect our water.
As we all now know the messaging and public awareness created by those who were committed to protecting our water did not negatively impact our communities. In fact we all came to know that groundwater tested to be the purest ever tested in the world. We all learned that managing our waste to avoid building landfill sites is achievable and highly desirable. We learned that the County of Simcoe hid the fact that Site 41 had been chosen for the development of a 30 million dollar Integrated Waste Management Facility to be built and operated by Miller Waste Systems at Site 41.
So here’s what I think. We all need to remember how much money was wasted to develop Site 41. We need to be reminded of the Information and Privacy Commissioner Cavoukian words spoken in regards to the County’s withholding of key records relating to the environmental integrity of Site 41, “If citizens are to participate meaningfully in the democratic process and hold politicians and bureaucrats accountable, they must have timely access to this type of information”. The County of Simcoe is badly broken. May the newly elected Mayor of Springwater have the credibility and necessary skills required to help fix it.
