With the municipal elections nomination period now over, two uncontested seats have already been claimed in Adjala-Tosorontio.
Current Ward 3 Coun. Mary Small Brett will be the town’s next Deputy Mayor. The only other potential candidate was Ward 4 Coun. Joy Webster. However, in July she decided to pull out and not seek re-election for this or any position on town council due to personal reasons.“I’m very honoured the constituents have faith in me,” Small Brett said. “I will work very hard living up to that trust.”
Small Brett said current Deputy Mayor Doug Little’s choice to not seek re-election did influence her decision to run for deputy mayor, but it wasn’t primarily a deciding factor.
Little will be now seeking nomination for Ward 3.
He says his decision to take a less active role on council was something he weighed heavily in his mind. A recent accident with his lawnmower has left his hand severely damaged and it’s likely he will spend many months, if not years, in therapy to regain full use of it.
He’s also decided he needs to devote more of his attention to his family.
“I’ve been spending a lot more time at committee meetings,” Little said. “I needed to slow down for one term.”
“But I’m going to be just as effective as a councillor,” he added.
Ward 4 was also left uncontested, which paved the way for Tom Gauley to join the next session of council. Gauley, a life-long resident of Everett, is a former council member of Tosorontio. He spent nine years on council, from 1981 to 1990.
He also ran in the 2006 election and lost to Joy Webster.
Just last week, two names for the Adjala-Tosorontio election were scratched off the list: Janet Bludgell (Ward 3) and Antoinette MacPherson (Ward 2).
Meanwhile, Marilynn Cook, a former council in the township in the early 1990s, added her name on Sept. 7 to run in Ward 2, while William Boston decided on Sept. 8 to take a shot at Ward 1.
After much deliberation, Mayor Tom Walsh made it official on Aug. 30 that he would be seeking re-election. Ward 1 Coun. Jack Jordan and Leo Losereit will also be making bids to become the township’s next mayor.

Essa
In Essa Township, the candidates’ list for the upcoming election has undergone a couple of last minute changes.
Now only three people will be vying for the Ward 2 seat in Essa. Robert Klikorka has since decided to pull out from the race and had his name taken off the docket officially on Sept. 3. Incumbent Ward 2 Coun. Rick Newlove will now be going up against two other hopefuls: Ken Cooke and Michael Smith.
It was starting to look as if Ward 3 was going to be an uncontested battle for current Coun. Ron Henderson. However, just before the nomination deadline rolled by on Friday Sept. 10, Lee Redmayne added her name to the list.
