News release from Tony Guergis – September 8, 2010
Described as “a forceful and passionate advocate” for his community, Mayor Tony Guergis has announced he will seek re-election for a second term as Mayor of the Township of Springwater. “Springwater is a very special community,” Guergis says. “I’m proud to be part of it and proud of what I’ve been able to do to protect our way of life these past ten years as Councillor, Deputy Mayor and then Mayor.
One of the many accomplishments he’s seen implemented was to work towards preserving the Elmvale District High School. “Sending 550 students to a school an hour outside Elmvale is unacceptable for them and would be devastating for the community,” Guergis said.
He has also implemented an economic development strategy designed to keep taxes low but ensure funding is available for what matters most to our residents – parks, walking trails, recreational buildings, police, and health care. His newly initiated “Mayors Golf Tournament” has additionally raised more than $40,000 for the RVH and the Simcoe Muskoka District Cancer Care Centre and almost $9,000.00 towards efforts to save the high school.
Under Guergis’s leadership, the Township of Springwater has made impressive progress the last four years – better roads, recreational facilities, and increased federal and provincial funding for township initiatives.
Soon after being elected Mayor of Springwater in 2006, Guergis was chosen as County Warden by members of Simcoe County Council. His effective leadership led to two further terms making him the first person to serve three consecutive terms as Warden in Simcoe County’s 160-year history.  As head of the second largest council in Ontario, Guergis gained considerable experience in working with senior levels of government. He also earned the respect of his peers in local government for his energy, vision and aptitude for leadership.
“Springwater is a great place to live,” he said. “And to make our community even better, we have to work and plan for it. We need a deep commitment to preserving our way of life and the things we hold most important. I am keen to continue making that kind of commitment.”
