Innisfil Mayor Brian Jackson is running for Barrie city council in next month’s municipal election.
Jackson, 61, registered to run in Ward 9 on Friday, when nominations closed.
When Barrie absorbed 5,664 acres of Innisfil land on Jan. 1, Jackson found himself in a new municipality.
“I now live in the city of Barrie and that’s the ward I live in,” said Jackson of his decision to run in Ward 9. “I’ll take my many years of municipal experience and see if I can contribute.”Jackson has been a municipal politician for 19 years – six as an Innisfil councillor and the last 13 as the town’s mayor.
“I have a reputation of being fair and honest and taking a common-sense approach to things,” he said.
Like many parts of south-Barrie, Jackson said growth is the biggest issue facing Ward 9. But he says the city has a good strategic plan for dealing with it and hopes to continue with that process.
Jackson’s involvement in boundary talks with Barrie, and his years as a Simcoe County councillor, have lead him to another challenge – if elected.
“I want to work to create a better working relationship with (Barrie’s) neighbours,” he said.
Jackson is also interested in services located on or near municipal boundaries, services that can be shared by the municipalities.
He joins incumbent Coun. Andrew Prince, Paolo Fabrizio and David Hardwick as a candidate in Ward 9.
