Barrie Examiner – September 10 2010
Local sign makers and printers should prepare for a busy fall. Every position on Barrie council is now contested. The city’s clerk’s office was busy with more candidates filing election papers Thursday, with Friday’s 2 p.m. deadline looming. That included the addition of Muhammad Tahir (Nawaz) challenging Michael Prowse for his Ward 6 seat. Until Thursday, it appeared as though the incumbent would be acclaimed.
The race in Ward 8 continues to heat up with Alison Eadie adding her name to the growing list of people looking to fill a spot being left vacant by Coun. Jerry Moore. Earlier this week, figure skating champion Jennifer Robinson, Ghulam Jilani and Don McLaurin filed their nomination papers challenging Don MacNeil and John S. Webb for the ward.
Eadie has previously been a Barrie city councillor.
Patricia Copeland will also try to return to city council. The former councillor and one-time mayoral candidate has tossed her name into the ring for Ward 5, challenging James Palmer, Peter Rose, Peter Silveira, Michael J. Tuck and Cory William Watkins.
In Ward 7, Peter Tymciw is now challenging incumbent John Brassard alongside Steven Mallon and Jeffrey Waye.
In Ward 10, Alex Shevchenko is now challenging incumbent Alex Nuttall and Michael Fernandes.
The Barrie Examiner will have a complete list of municipal candidates running in Barrie, Innisfil as well as Essa, Springwater and Oro-Medonte townships in Saturday’s issue, along with candidates for trustees for the local school boards. The coverage will continue right to election day, Oct. 25.
