Leo Losereit has thrown his hat into the 2010 Adjala-Tosorontio mayoralty race.
The former Everett councillor has been involved in the political game for over 20 years. Back in 1990 when he was 18 years old he ran for office as an NDP candidate and lost to Jim Wilson in the provincial election.
In 2006 he ran for the mayor’s office but lost to incumbent Tom Walsh by a margin of 350 votes.
Losereit is also the president of the Everett Baseball Association and the founder of the Everett Parks Improvement Committee (EPIC).
Losereit, 39, says a large part of his campaign will focus on increasing voter turnout.
“More people need to understand the importance of the municipal vote,” he said. “I am hoping we can get up to 50 per cent voter turnout this year.”
Other key issues for Losereit include waste management. He says he would like to explore the use of garbage incinerators as means of diverting waste from landfills. He said he will also address the issue of residents getting “value for their services,” and look at new ways to lower operating and insurance costs incurred by the municipality.
“I think it’s time to pass the reigns to a newer, more energetic voice,” he said. “We need a particular spark and I believe that’s what I can offer.”
As it stands, the only other candidate registered to run for mayor in Adjala-Tosorontio is Ward 1 councillor Jack Jordan.
Current mayor Tom Walsh has not announced if his he is running for re-election.
