NEW TECUMSETH – A third candidate has entered the race to be New Tecumseth’s Ward 1 councillor.
Joyce Walker filed her nomination papers for the northwest Alliston ward on Tuesday, Aug. 3. The other candidates for the ward are former New Tecumseth councillors Bob Marrs and Gary Dorland, and former Adjala-Tosorontio councillor Wayne Noye.
This is the first time Walker is running for municipal council in New Tecumseth. In 2003 she ran for Essa Township mayor.
“I love the community and I want to be a voice for people in my area,” said Walker, who has lived in Alliston for three years. Before that she was an Essa resident for 22 years.
Walker has worked in the financial service industry for 25 years and has been a local volunteer in various capacities for the same length of time.
Some of the issues on Walker’s radar are improving pathways and access to Riverdale Park, helping small businesses in downtown Alliston and encouraging sustainable growth and quality of life in Alliston and New Tecumseth.
Walker also plans to meet with residents in her ward to find out what they think councillors should be working towards.
“This is where you can really make a difference, you’re not representing a party, you’re representing a community,” said Walker.
The municipal election is on Oct. 25. A full list of New Tecumseth’s candidates is available online at www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca.
