NEW TECUMSETH – Having another road upgraded this year wasn’t on the agenda, but Monday night Beeton Coun. Richard Norcross managed to get council to see the light about the need to improve Patterson Street.
In July, Norcross asked town staff to price out how much it would cost to upgrade a 200-metre stretch of Patterson Street in Beeton between Cedar and Stewart.
“I think we have to fix it, the road’s undriveable. We can’t put any more cold patch on it,” said Norcross.
At a committee of the whole meeting Monday, New Tecumseth manager of engineering Rick Vatri said work on the road would cost about $32,000.
With the town predicting a $285,000 surplus this year (before any transfers are made to reserves), Norcross said the cost for the roadwork could come the surplus and he asked for the project to be tendered. The motion passed, with support from Norcross, Coun. Christine Brayford, Coun. Jim Stone, Deputy Mayor Rick Milne and Mayor Mike MacEachern.
Coun. Barbara Huson doesn’t support adding new roads to this year’s work schedule, however. She also disagrees with Norcross’s description of the road and said it’s not undriveable.
Huson said council shouldn’t be pulling roads out of a hat and having the work done. She noted a roads report, listing the roads that need work in the town, was passed in October.
Huson, who isn’t running in the upcoming election, said the next council should go out and look at the roads needing work in town, create a report and do the work in some logical order.
