ESSA TWP. – A new candidate has thrown his hat into the ring for the deputy mayor race in Essa Township.
Shawn Bubel declared his nomination today (Friday, July 30). Bubel is a longtime Essa resident, who lives in Ward 2 with his wife and daughter.
“Over the next few months, I look forward to meeting with voters, hearing the issues that matter to them and talking about how we move Essa forward,” he said in a statement released today.
Bubel said he has experience in government, and is currently an assistant to Barrie MP Patrick Brown.
Among his list of concerns, is the health and vibrancy of democracy in Essa. Bubel said there has been a lack of candidates for electors to choose from during the past recent elections, giving voters little to no choice.
He is troubled by the number of acclamations in recent Essa elections but does not think it means people don’t care.
“Basically, it’s been seven years since the people of Essa have had any say in who represents them. There are great people living in Essa,” he said.
“We are people who care about our community, we care about our environment and we care about our future. If voters are given the choice of moving in a new direction or simply settling for more of the same, I think they will respond optimistically”.
Bubel will be running against Sandie Macdonald, the current Ward 1 councillor. The current deputy mayor, Terry Dowdall, is running for mayor against incumbent David Guergis.
Bubel also has experience in the insurance industry, in commercial property management and leasing, and operating his own business.
