SEVERN – There could be a double shot of Dunlop in the local political sphere later this year.
Jane Dunlop, wife of Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop, is running for the Ward 2 council seat in Severn Township.
“I’ve always wanted to do it, but raising the kids and having a business and everything, and Garfield was in there, so I wasn’t able to do it at the time,” she said yesterday. “I have the time now and the opportunity came up so I’d like to do it.”
Dunlop was raised in a family with a political lineage dating back to her great-grandfather, who served as reeve of what was then Matchedash Township, which later amalgamated with Coldwater and Orillia Township to form Severn.
Her grandfather and father held the position as well.
“The township should work more with our urban areas, being Port Severn, Washago and Coldwater,” Dunlop said, citing improvements to services and infrastructure as a top priority. “If you lose that urban part of the township, it is bad. We really need to make sure that the urban areas are looked after well.”
Dunlop’s community involvement has included serving on the Coldwater Mill Heritage Foundation as fundraising chair and founding chair of the Coldwater Business Improvement Area.
She sits on the village’s library board and oversaw the community’s 100 anniversary celebrations.
Her business, Country Girl Creations, was established in 1977.
