County councillors plan conservation authority review
By Kate Harries WaterWatch
County councillors on the newly minted conservation authority review sub-committee met today to adopt their terms of reference. Present were Warden Cal Patterson, Ramara Deputy Mayor Basil Clarke, Essa Mayor David Guergis, Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes, Clearview Deputy Mayor Alicia Savage, Severn Mayor Phil Sled. Tiny Mayor Peggy Breckenridge is a member but was not present. The sub-committee will look at the services provided by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Severn Sound Environmental Association “with a view to identifying any duplication and opportunities for more efficient processes to deliver the required and intended services.” The sub-committee has been described as stacked against the conservation authorities, but today, all councillors said they’re just on a fact-finding mission, to discover if their funds are spent wisely. “We’re not going out as a vigilante group,” Hughes said.
After the meeting, Guergis engaged in a lively discussion with members of the public, explaining that he favours transferring planning approvals functions presently undertaken by the conservation authorities to upper-tier municipalities like Simcoe County.
